This week Omarama School held a swimming display for parents and whanau to come and view.
The younger students shared water confidence activities and were supported in the pool by our teacher aide, who is also a swimming instructor.
The older students competed in Breaststroke, Backstroke, Butterfly and Freestyle heats. This was followed by a medley for our more confident swimmers and then a whanau freestyle relay. We concluded our display with a fun relay race between students and teachers.
A great day was had by all and we thank our parent community for supporting this event.
The Year 7 and Year 8 Leadership team attended a 3 day camp at Peel Forest, in week 4. This camp is designed to build leadership skills and develop confidence in the outdoors.
The activities were organised and run by Peel Forest Outdoor Centre and included: High Ropes, Local Bush walk and Rafting the lower Rangitata river.
All students showed enthusiasm, endurance and determination to 'push themselves, into less comfortable zones'.
A fun time was held by all, but very weary on their return to school!
In term 1 Omarama School had a visit from the Science in a Van show to engage and inspire students as they began their Science Inquiry unit. Science in a Van delivered their brand new science show called“Daring Demos” It was a real mix of physics and chemistry based experiments. Our students were very excited to watch this show, engage in the show and stimulate their curiosities around Science.
Another event from Term 1 involved a visit from Jay Morris (Police Officer from Oamaru,, who has an affiliation with Omarama School). Jay and his off-sider Kale , along with a local man called Stan came along to school and taught our students about bike safety. All students had their brakes and tyres checked and all helmets were checked to ensure they were fitting correctly. Students then followed in groups with adult supervision and made their way to
Omarama bike park, where lessons were held to ensure students could ride their bikes and handle their bikes appropriately. To add a little fun to the day students decorated their bikes and we held a competition for the best dressed bike! This is an annual event and great to tap into local resources.
Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. Omarama School supports this and we celebrated by brainstorming kind messages, dressing up in pink, watching a video and playing collaborative games with their Whanau groups.
Omarama school is part of the ELC (Enriching local curriculum) programme and this allows us to visit Aoraki National Park and participate in learning programmes. On our recent visit we learnt about what a National Park is, Predators and Trapping and Stream Health. We were fortunate with the weather and a great day was held by all. Follow up activities from this trip have continued back in the classrooms with a visit from Rusty who works for the Routeburn Dart Preservation Trust.
He showed students the different types of traps and let them set them off with a stick. Then some students went out and set up ten chew cards and 3 ink pads to see what pests had been lurking around the playground.
Omarama School was fortunate enough to be invited along to a Hangi at Omarama Station. Some of our students went along early in the morning to watch the kai being laid. At 12pm the whole school walked along and observed the Hangi setting and met with many locals from the community. Our students received lessons in working with flax (harakeke) from beside the local church building, to make flowers. They were also shown how to observe and identify bugs and this supported our learning up at Aoraki National park.
